IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) is offering a PhD position in the field of power electronics for electric mobility. The research will focus on the development of a multifunctional traction inverter integrating additional functions (e.g., a DC/DC stage), providing new degrees of freedom compared to conventional two-level inverters. These functionalities will enable optimized converter operation, improved thermal management, and ultimately enhanced reliability and durability of electric powertrains.
Among this objective, a key challenge of this work is the design of virtual thermal sensors based on advanced models, such as artificial intelligence methods (AI), able to accurately estimate semiconductor junction temperatures, which are critical for component lifetime. By combining topological and functional exploration with advanced thermal modeling, the PhD student will aim to establish an integrated methodology for converter design and optimized control.
The PhD candidate will join IFPEN’s “Power Electronics” team, collaborating closely with experts in thermal management, control, and electrical systems, as well as with industrial and academic partners involved in national and European projects. This research will provide a unique opportunity to contribute to the energy transition by developing innovative, durable, and high-power-density solutions for future electric traction systems.
